Madurai: A 54-year-old man was arrested today at Virudhungar town in the district for allegedly confining an engineering college student in a house for more than three months and torturing her.
Police said that Dhanarajasekhar had confined the 19-year- old girl, his friend's niece, in a house and had subjected her to various forms of torture, including beatings.
On a complaint from the girl's aunt and parents, the man was arrested today and the girl set free, they said.
Police said they are investigating why the man confined the girl to a house for such a long period and tortured her.
They said Dhanarajasekhar had told a woman friend he was helping many poor students in their studies in colleges. She had then asked for his help to get her neice admitted in an engineering college, which he did.
Initially, the girl was staying in the college hostel but moved to a private accomodation three months back, police said.
Her parents grew worried when they could not contact her for some time and questioned Dhanarajasekhar, who had given them evasive replies.
They were also told by the college management that their daughter had not been coming to the college for the past three months, following which they again questioned Dhanarajasekhar about her whereabouts.
Not getting a convincing reply, the parents and aunt filed a police compliant.
Police said that Dhanarajasekhar had confessed to having kept the girl in illegal detention in the house for three months.
The girl also told police that she had been tortured by him.
