Madurai:
A member of a gang that was allegedly involved in cheating pawn shop owners and banks by pledgingfake jewellery as original was arrested.
Saravanan, who runs an imitation jewellery workshop was arrested at Simmakkal in the city when he tried to pledgea fake jewel, police said.
Police also seized fake jewel and cash to the tune of about Rs 2.3 lakh from his workshop in the city.
They had been keeping a close watch on pawn shops and banks following reports that the gang had struck in the districts of Theni, Dindigul and Madurai, police said.
In the past six months Saravanan had allegedly pledged about 100 sovereigns of fake gold and taken money for them,they said. The other members of the gang are absconding.
