Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwari Lal Purohit has triggered controversy after he held a review meet with the district administration in Coimbatore prompting an opposition leader to dub the meet as "overreach."

Mr Purohit, who went to the city yesterday to attend a varsity's convocation ceremony, also convened a review meeting with the district administration to review. It was attended by several senior officials including the collector, city police commissioner, and corporation commissioner.

Collector T N Hariharan made a power point presentation at the meet, which stretched for around two hours, according to sources.

Mr Purohit, accompanied by Municipal Administration Minister S. P. Velumani, reviewed the Swachh Bharat Campaign today.

However, CPM State President C Ramakrishnan attacked the Tamil Nadu governor for holding the review meet calling it an "overreach." "This highlights yet again that the Tamil Nadu government functions as a puppet of the BJP government at the centre," he said.

A senior leader from the opposition party, DMK, said, "This is clearly against federalism and the state's autonomy."

The ruling AIADMK, however, said there was nothing wrong with the governor holding the meet. "What's wong about this? There's nothing happening the way you think," Mr Velumani said.
