Security forces at the Chennai airport seized a pistol from a former lawmaker today.
Chennai, Tamil Nadu:
A pistol with eight bullets was today seized from a former DMK lawmaker at the Chennai airport just before his departure to Madurai by a private airlines flight.
During the screening of hand baggage of SR Jeyadurai, who represented Tuticorin seat in parliament, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel found a pistol with eight bullets, said airport officials.
The former lawmaker was told by officials that the fire arm could not be allowed in the flight as per rules, and he had not made a prior declaration about the weapon.
The DMK leader had an argument with the airport officials. He told them that it was a licensed weapon and sought their permission to take it with him in flight.
As the officials stuck to their position that weapons cannot be allowed, Mr Jeyadurai handed it over to his family representative, following which he was cleared to board another flight.
Mr Jeyadurai was scheduled to take a private airlines flight to Madurai.
