Chennai: Union Minister and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar met ally and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam or DMDK chief, actor Vijayakanth in Chennai, ahead of the assembly elections due in May. The meeting comes amidst doubts over DMDK's continuation in the alliance with the BJP.
The minister said, "We had a good discussion. I will brief BJP President and the Prime Minister and come back after the budget."
The BJP which has negligible presence in the state had fought the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the DMDK, PMK and three other small parties. While, the BJP and the PMK won one seat each, the DMDK drew a blank.
But, in the 2011 assembly polls the party had won 29 seats in alliance with J Jayalalithaa's AIADMK. The two ended the alliance soon after the AlADMK formed the government.
After reviving ties with the Congress recently, the DMK in Tamil Nadu had also invited the DMDK to join the alliance.
Last week, Mr Vijayakanth lost his position of Leader of Opposition in the state assembly after eight rebel legislators from his party resigned and joined the AIADMK.
