Chennai: Sounding the poll bugle well ahead of next year's Assembly elections, AIADMK chief and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today told party workers to reach out to all the 5.62 crore voters in Tamil Nadu and announced the appointment of vote canvassers for the mammoth task.

"I feel it is essential to tell the 5,62,06,547 voters covered in 64,094 polling stations on behalf of AIADMK that Tamil Nadu is marching on a growth path never seen before due to the achievements through efforts aimed at people's development," she said.

For this purpose, "vote canvassers will be appointed and this mammoth task will be carried out by the party forum functioning in my name (J Jayalalithaa Peravai)", she said in a party release in Chennai.

AIADMK has already been holding a string of public meetings across the state to highlight the achievements of the four-year rule of the party and the recent victory of the party chief in the bypoll for the RK Nagar seat.

Also, against the backdrop of the opposition parties' sustained campaign seeking closure of the state-run chain of retail liquor outlets, she said, "The AIADMK government headed by me continues to implement a slew of welfare projects with the sole aim of welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu."

DMK and other parties have been holding a series of protests on several issues and DMK treasurer MK Stalin has been addressing public meetings across the state targeting the ruling party.

"It is no exaggeration to say that, in a democracy, each and every voter getting to know the government's schemes and achievements will add to the strength and pride of the ruling dispensation,"Ms Jayalalithaa said.

"Each and every vote canvasser, along with party functionaries of the specific polling station, should meet the electors of that area as many times as possible and explain the accomplishments of the government," she said.

She directed all functionaries at various levels, including the party's district secretaries, to "extend full cooperation to this essential task, which will be executed by the Jayalalithaa Peravai."
