The Madras High Court has directed that no renovation work should be carried out in temples belonging to the Chola period unless it is technologically and properly supervised.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, passed the interim order on an interim application filed by one Shivakumar.
The petitioner had claimed that some renovation was going on in ancient temples having archaeological importance.
This was going on when the issue of their maintenance is pending before the court, he alleged. Besides, a committee had been constituted by the court to go into the issue of renovation of temples. He also produced some photographs.
On perusing some photos, the bench directed that no renovation work should be carried out unless it is technologically and properly supervised "as the claim is that after sand water blasting, immense damage has been caused to the statues."
The bench then posted the matter to October 14. The court had appointed senior counsel P.S. Raman as head of the committee to go into several aspects with regard to the issue of archeaological importance of temples which were neglected and renovation carried out without consulting experts.
On August 31, the committee submitted a detailed report after visiting some temples on which the bench questioned the government on the steps to be taken on the interim recommendations of the committee.
