Security has been beefed up in this pilgrim town ahead of the Republic Day celebrations with deployment of police, including coastal security guards and Railway police, at sensitive localities.
CCTVs and metal detectors had been set up at all the important places including, Railway stations and temples. The Coast Guard also intensified patrolling of the sea between Sri Lanka and India, police said.
More armed policemen would be deployed in trains. Vehicle checking was being made throughout the night from today.
Armed police had been deployed at vital installations including telephone towers, exchanges and the Pamban railway bridge.
