Chennai:
The Madras High Court has directed authorities to sensitise stakeholders on preventing minors from consuming liquor by displaying boards and increasing awareness about its harmful effects.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanaryana, before which a petition filed by A Narayanan of 'Change India' came up, said, "It is trite to say that there is increase in drinking habits and thus, it is necessary to ensure that the age bar rule is enforced effectively."
In his petition, Mr Narayanan sought a direction to the authorities to prevent the sale of alcohol to people below 21 years and they should not be permitted to consume liquor.
He sought a direction to the government to promote awareness among school children and the public about the harmful effects of consuming alcohol by persons under the legal age.
Advocate General AL Somayaji assured the bench that the government would take necessary steps and due publicity given.
