Chennai:

A group of seven teachers from a government-aided school in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelvelli district have been arrested for allegedly making students clean the school toilets.

Among those arrested are seven teachers, including headmaster Jeyakumar, and Correspondent Solomon Jeba. All eight have been booked under Juvenile Justice Act and have been granted bail by a local court.

The police action came following a complaint parents of some Dalit children.

"Preliminary investigation reveals the school made children clean toilets, but they did not particularly target Dalit students," said V Vikraman, District Superintendent of Police. But this violates a directive by the Supreme Court, he added.

Defending the school's action, a source close to the management said, "The government is not approving conservancy staff for schools. Nor are managements allowed to collect additional fee parents to employ people. Their act in good faith has now backfired."
