Chennai: Two days after being suspended for creating ruckus inside the Tamil Nadu assembly, 80 of the DMK's 89 legislators today held a 'model session' outside the assembly premises.
Led by DMK treasurer MK Stalin, at first the party's legislator tried to force their way into the Tamil Nadu assembly. When they were denied entry, they staged a mock session right outside the assembly premises.
"We are doing this to show how the assembly should be held. We also want live telecast of the assembly proceedings so people know what happening inside. We have moved the Madras High Court to challenge the suspension of our legislators," DMK treasurer MK Stalin told NDTV.
Yesterday, DMK legislators had attempted to enter the assembly premises on the pretext of using the official room allotted to the leader of the opposition, Mr Stalin.
On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu assembly speaker P Dhanapal had suspended 80 DMK legislators for unruly behavior after they repeatedly interrupted the assembly session. DMK legislators claim they were only protesting defamatory remarks made by an AIADMK legislator against MK Stalin.
During a debate on demands for grants for Housing and IT departments on Wednesday, AIADMK leader S Gunasekaran had made a reference to the 'Namaku Naame' program undertaken by Mr Stalin earlier this year. The DMK had strongly objected to these references and wanted the speaker to expunge the remarks. However, since Mr Stalin was not directly named by Mr Gunasekaran the speaker refused to accept demands of the DMK legislators who repeatedly interrupted the ongoing session.
