The young couple was attacked in broad daylight by men carrying sharp weapons.
Chennai:
Five men, who were allegedly involved in the daylight hacking of a 22-year-old engineering student in Tamil Nadu, have been sent to jail for 15 days.
All of the alleged attackers have been sent to Coimbatore Central Prison.
V Sankar, a Dalit, and his young wife Kausalya were out shopping on a crowded road on Sunday when they were attacked by men armed with sickles and other sharp weapons.
Police say these are the men seen armed in the CCTV footage that captured the gruesome attack.
Apart from murder and attempt to murder charges, the police have also invoked the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Three of the alleged attackers are related to the woman's family, the police said, adding they are also on the lookout for another man.
Sankar, a Dalit, and 19-year-old Kausalya had married eight months ago after meeting in college. Kausalya's family, which belongs to the powerful and dominant Thevar caste, had refused to accept the marriage and had allegedly threatened the couple several times.
Kausalya is being treated for head injuries. Her father Chinnasamy has surrendered but claimed he had no role in the killing and that he turned himself in because the police were looking for him.
