Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu:
As part of efforts to increase awareness among voters on the importance of exercising their franchise without fail, Nagapattinam Collector and District Election Officer S Palanisami on Thursday went on a paragliding sortie at the beach in Nagapattinam.
As he went on the paragliding sortie in the new beach area, billboards there urged people to vote on May 16.
"The event was held as part of efforts to create more awareness on the need to vote," he told reporters.
Street-corner meetings, skits, human-chains, rallies were among other initiatives undertaken to create voter-awareness, he said.
Such initiatives were being carried out in 138 polling stations that recorded very low percentage of polling in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he said.
"Such paragliding events will be held in Vedaranyam beach, and in 'Rajan Thottam' in Mayiladuthurai. General public, and other sections of society like college students should participate in it," he said.
Besides the district collector, students drawn from schools and colleges including those pursuing nursing also went paragliding and urged voters to ensure 100 per cent polling.
