Tamil Nadu reported 13,990 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, with the state's positivity rate soaring above 10 per cent, as the state imposed new restrictions in view of the Pongal festival.
The new cases were detected among the 1,35,266 samples tested today. Besides, 11 deaths were also reported in the state that increased its death count to 36,866.
Of the new cases, Chennai accounted for 6,190 fresh infections followed by Chengalpattu with 1,696 and Thiruvallur 1,054 new cases. On Sunday, 12,895 new cases were detected in the state.
No new case of the new Omicron variant was detected across the state on Monday, according to the state health bulletin.
With 2,547 infected coronavirus patients getting discharged after treatment, Tamil Nadu's recovery tally has increased to 27,14,643. The state currently has 62,767active cases.
Chennai's recovery count also increased to 5,55,321 with the city witnessing 1,127 recoveries in a single day. The city reported four new virus-related deaths today.
The state, meanwhile, tightened restrictions ahead of the Pongal festival and extended lockdown restrictions till January 31. Besides, a total lockdown has also been announced on coming Sunday. There are 30,843 active cases in the city.
Places of worship in the state will be closed for the public from January 14 till January 18, according to the new restrictions. Pongal special outstation buses with be allowed to run with only 75 per cent occupancy. This will be in addition to the existing guidelines.
