All opposition parties in the state, including DMDK Chief Karunanidhi and actor Vijayakanth have condemned Kovan's arrest.
Chennai:
A court in Chennai has permitted the city police to interrogate Tamil folk singer Kovan, accused of sedition, under custody for two days.
Turning down the prosecution's request for a five-day custody, the court also allowed the singer's lawyer to meet him twice a day.
Kovan, 54, was arrested last Friday for mocking Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and slamming the Tamil Nadu Government's liquor policy in his video album that demands total prohibition in the state.
The video also caricatures Jayalalithaa serving liquor to people.
Police said the lyrics could incite enmity among groups. However activists say it is a gross misuse of law and an attack on freedom of expression.
All opposition parties in the state, including DMDK Chief Karunanidhi and actor Vijayakanth have condemned the arrest.
However the ruling AIADMK has said the singer's arrest was a decision taken by the police and the party has nothing to do it.
Police also arrested around 150 members of a cultural group in Chennai earlier this week for protesting against Kovan's arrest.
Tamil Nadu government earned a revenue of 27,000 crore through sale of liquor last year.
