Erode: A tusker around 18-years-old has been found to have been gored to death by another tusker in Sathyamangalam forest division in the district, officials said.
The deceased elephant was found dead with injuries yesterday by forest officials at Marur forest area within Thalamalai forest range in Sathyamangalam forest division.
A veterinarian who examined the dead elephant concluded it had been killed by another tusker.
Forest officials said that usually around this time of the season, the male elephants will be in search of females for mating and they would fight over it.
The dead elephant could have been killed during one such fight when one of the tuskers pierced the other with its tusks, they said.
The officials removed the tusks and left the body in the forest area after postmortem, saying the flesh and other parts can be consumed by other animals roaming in the area.
