Chennai:
Eight policemen of Tamil Nadu face arrest on charges of sexually assaulting two minor girls in Puducherry in April last year. The Madras High Court on Monday dismissed their plea for protection from arrest, observing that the policemen have acted as "vultures in uniform."
The court also said the "accused command a lot of influence and have men, money and material at their disposal which they can misuse." The girls have identified the policemen. The court said the girls had been threatened over the phone by the accused men.
The girls, who were rescued from a prostitution racket, had approached the Child Welfare Committee and told them that some police officers were also part of the racket. Nine police officers were suspended and booked. One of the policemen has retired and two inspectors have been dismissed from service.
