Chennai: Expanding the reach of "Brand Amma" in her second term, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered the construction of air conditioned "Amma Marriage Halls" to help families who can't afford to rent exorbitantly-priced venues for weddings.
"Poor people have to pay high rents to marriage halls for conducting functions like wedding. Therefore, to benefit them, I have directed constructing 'Amma Marriage Halls'," the Chief Minister said in a statement, hinting that the halls would be let out at lower rentals.
A total of 11 "Amma Marriage Halls" will be built across Tamil Nadu, including five in Chennai, one each in Madurai, Tirunelvelli, Salem, Tirupur and Tiruvallur for Rs 83 crore.
People can book these halls online. CM Jayalalithaa's statement said these halls would have rooms for the bride and the groom and a dining hall.
In her earlier term, Ms Jayalalithaa had launched Amma Canteens that sell a plate of idlis for Re 1. This struck a chord with masses and now is a popular breakfast spot across the state. The chief minister has since launched Amma Pharmacies, Amma Water, Amma Cement, Amma Salt and Amma Baby Kit.
The announcement of the Amma Marriage Hall comes ahead of civic body polls that are likely to be held next month.
