Nalgonda: A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Telangana's Nalgonda district after failing to convince her parents to build a toilet in the house.
Kadaparthi Rekha, a junior college student in Gundala sub division, allegedly poured kerosene and set herself on fire last night around 9 pm. The teen was reportedly embarrassed as she had to use toilet in open and bath in makeshift tents of gunny bags, said Investigating Officer K. Raju.
Her parents, Sattiah and Nagamma, are farm labourers and couldn't afford the expense to build a toilet.
Police is also investigating if Rekha was being harassed or stalked by someone and therefore she was so desperate for privacy and safety.
The sanitation drive is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Clean India campaign. The PM had even underscored it in his first Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
