Hyderabad : A day after overnight downpour caused widespread flooding in Hyderabad, heavy rains continued in several areas of the city sparking fears of waterlogging while 5,000 people were evacuated from neighbouring district Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who was in Delhi, said that the army could be called in to help the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Rapid Action Force who had already been called.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was held at the control room of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which was attended by Deputy chief minister Mahmood Ali, home minister Narasimha Reddy, animal husbandry minister Srinivas Yadav, mayor Bonthu Rammohan and municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao.
GHMC ordered that in view of the impending rains, Control Rooms at all the Zonal and Circle Offices of GHMC would function round the clock.
People living in low-lying areas were told to evacuate their homes while dilapidated buildings were ordered to be vacated and demolished.
Over 865 such structures have been demolished this season and with heavy rains forecast in Telangana over the next four days authorities are likely to keep a close watch.
Every day, 4,000 cusecs of water is being released from Hussain Sagar Lake, an outflow that equals the inflow of rain in the area.
An alert has also been issued around the Musi river and for all schools to remain shut in the GHMC limits.
In the neighbouring Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, unprecedented rains forced at least 5,000 people to be brought out of their homes and villages to relief camps.
Choppers were deployed in the rescue operations, while passenger trains were delayed.
Despite the rescue efforts, five people, including a woman and two children lost their lives after being swept away in the waters.
