Baby Bhavani -- the three-month-old at the centre of the NDTV expose about sale of babies for adoption in Telangana
Hyderabad:
A woman alleged to be the kingpin of a baby-selling racket in Telangana, arrested after an NDTV expose last month, has been released on bail.
Kamli was arrested on April 23 after NDTV's expose about a child selling racket in Telangana's Nalgonda district. She was caught on camera talking about selling baby girls.
Within three weeks, she has been granted bail by the Hyderabad High Court.
When an undercover NDTV team had gone to a government-run children's home in Nalgonda, posing as a childless couple, Kamli had offered them a three-month-old baby, Bhavani, for Rs. 30,000. Asked if anything could go wrong, she had boasted, "You don't know Kamli. I have given at least 20 babies so far".
Police said Kamli has admitted to selling one baby for Rs. 17,000. The baby's father was also arrested; he had allegedly accepted Rs. 5,000 as "hospital expenses" after giving away the child. The couple that had "bought" the child after having several stillborn babies, is also in jail.
