Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Wednesday decided to provide a total of nine gas cylinders at subsidised rates in a year to every household in the state.

"We have decided to abide by the recommendation of the United Democratic Front. As a result, the cabinet has decided to raise the number of cylinders from six as decided by the central government to a maximum of nine, subject to the usage of the previous year," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday night, after the weekly cabinet meeting.

"The maximum one house gets will depend on last year's usage but none will get more than nine," clarified Mr Chandy.

Consequent to this, the state government will have to incur an approximate additional expense of Rs.120 crore.

Meanwhile, CPI-M Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has demanded that every household should get 12 cylinders a year.
