Mullaperiyar dam: Talks with Tamil Nadu on Dec 15 or 16, says Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram: Talks with Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar dam issue will be held either on December 15 or December 16, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said after a special Cabinet meeting Monday night.

The special Cabinet postponed discussions on Advocate- General K P Dandapani's remarks before the High Court, to Wednesday's Cabinet meeting when the AG is scheduled to present his case in person.

Tamil Nadu did not appear for talks scheduled in New Delhi on Monday due to inconvenience, Chandy said. ''They have informed us that either December 15 or December 16 would be convenient for them. Kerala is prepared any day for talks,'' Chandy said. ''Now there is an atmosphere for talks with Tamil Nadu.'' The all-party meeting on the Mullaperiyar issue will begin at 10 am in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, he said. "On the Mullaperiyar issue, Kerala has a single voice,'' he said.

Kumily Incident
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been imposed in Kumily and Kambammedu following violent incidents, the Chief Minister said. He called for peace with the Mullaperiyar dispute sparking violence in some areas.  He urged the public to refrain from activities that could worsen the relationship with Tamil Nadu and endanger talks on the Mullaperiyar dam issue. The Chief Minister has also instructed DGP Jacob Punnoose to ensure that law and order is maintained.
