Students of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College say they do not agree with the dress code.
The Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has raked up a controversy after a circular issued by authorities has barred students from wearing jeans, short tops and "noisy" ornaments.
The annual circular which lays down the guidelines for attendance and exams, also specifies a list of do's and don'ts which this time are all about dress codes.
The men have been directed not to wear jeans, t-shirts or other causal clothes and stick to only formal clothes with shoes.
The women have been asked to stick to formal dresses - churidar, saree and not jeans, leggings, short tops and no "noisy" ornaments.
But when NDTV visited the medical college, fourth year male students were seen walking out of the hospital wearing jeans.
"Jeans is like every day wear now. We all wear it. Women, may be for cultural reasons, usually stick to salwars at least during duty hours. But that should be their choice," said Mohammad SM, a student.
Dr Santosh, President, Confederation of Medical College said, "We completely disagree with such a circular. Times have changed, levels of comfort has changed. I agree that they should wear their white overcoats, but it's absurd to stop them from wearing jeans or leggings, which are far more comfortable for long hours."
The students union has asked for an open debate between the authorities and MBBS students on this issue.
Speaking to NDTV, the vice-principal who issued the notice said, "This circular is procedural. Right from second year, students have clinical postings in the hospital and we have to ensure a decorum. But they are free to wear whatever they wish in the hostel and after hours."
