Thiruvananthapuram:
Senior Congress leader and the party's chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, PJ Kurien filed his nomination for the June 25 election to the upper house of Parliament from Kerala on Thursday.
Mr Kurien, who is among three Rajya Sabha members retiring from Kerala, filed his papers before the Legislature Secretary.
Going by the party strength in the Assembly, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) could win two of three vacancies. UDF had already allotted one seat to front constituent Kerala Congress (M).
The LDF has proposed CPI(M)'s CP Narayanan as its 'first' candidate and CPI's CN Chandran as the 'second' candidate, paving the way for voting to fill the vacancies.
A former union minister and Lok Sabha member, Mr Kurien has been in the Rajya Sabha since 2005. He was cleared as the Rajya Sabha candidate by the Congress high command on Wednesday.
