Lucknow:

Warning that party politics should not be allowed in matters relating to development of backward regions like Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the reported proposal to set up a centrally controlled council authority for Bundelkhand.

Terming such a proposal against the very basis of Centre-state relations and also against the provisions of the Constitution, she has also requested the Prime Minister to sanction special area incentive package for Bundelkhand.

An official release said that the Chief Minister in the letter stated that that there were media reports that Centre, on one hand, was considering the request of the UP government, even as it was also mulling to set up an inter-state Bundelkhand Development Authority/Council under it.

She said that the administrative mechanism of Uttar Pradesh could effectively tackle the problems relating to local development.

Mayawati said the media reports indicated that the objective of the formation of council was to limit the role of state government.
