Two brothers held guilty of raping their 10-year-old niece were sentenced to life imprisonment today by a court in Chandigarh in a case that provoked widespread outrage when the girl was denied an abortion and had to give birth earlier this year.

The younger maternal uncle of a 10-year-old rape survivor has turned out to be the father of her two-month-old child, the police said today. Earlier, it was suspected that her elder uncle had fathered the baby who was delivered in August this year, they said.

The Supreme Court was today told that the DNA sample of the child delivered by a 10-year-old rape victim, who was denied abortion by the top court, has not matched with the accused arrested in connection with the case.

In a bind after a latest forensic report showed the DNA of the child delivered by a minor rape victim did not match with that of the accused, the Chandigarh Police are re-investigating the matter.
