500 And 2000 New Notes

The government today asserted that the new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes have single unique dimension, a statement that came on a day when opposition parties led by the Congress stalled proceedings in the Rajya Sabha alleging that notes having different sizes.

The Reserve Bank had "kept ready" a reasonable stock of new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes before the announcement of demonetisation on November 8 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Of this amount, Rs 110 crore was seized by the IT Department, Rs 4.54 crore seized by ED, Rs 26.21 crore by the CBI and Rs 38 lakh by the DRI, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.

The Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate and other government agencies have seized Rs 141.13 crore worth of new currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 while acting in different parts of the country, Lok Sabha was informed today.

Advocating the move, Home Ministry officials said most of the developed countries change security features of their currency notes every 3-4 years and therefore, it is absolutely necessary for India to follow this policy.

To check counterfeiting, the government plans to change security features of higher denomination banknotes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 every 3-4 years in accordance with global standards. The move comes in the wake of recovery of a large amount of fake Indian currency notes in last four months after demonetisation.

The Rs 2,000 banknotes were introduced along with new Rs 500 currency following the withdrawal of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from November 9, 2016.

The approximate cost of printing each note of new Rs 500 is in the range of Rs 2.87 to Rs 3.09, and Rs 3.54 to Rs 3.77 for Rs 2,000, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said.

Demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 bills was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 last year.

The deadline to submit invalid 500- and 1,000-rupee notes ends today. The RBI has asked banks to submit details of the deposits made in the outlawed currency. Two persons were arrested today with counterfeit Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 currency notes with a face value of Rs 26,10,000, police in Gujarat's Rajkot said.

A new Rs 500 note costs Rs 3.09 to print, while the magenta 2,000 rupee note costs Rs 3.54, the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL), which prints currency notes, has said.
