Eight Chinese naval vessels, including an aircraft carrier, passed between islands in Japan's southern Okinawa chain on Monday, Japan's defence ministry said in a news release.

The US Navy's Seventh Fleet did nothing illegal by holding operations in India's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) a few days ago, but it could have avoided publicly "thumbing its nose" at India, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said today.

The US has further toned down the discord over a naval operation carried out by that country within India's maritime EEZ last week. The exercise, carried out without India's permission, was conducted off the Lakshadweep coast and rankled India.

In a statement being looked at closely by the Indian government, the US Navy's 7th Fleet has said it conducted Freedom of Navigation Operations within India's exclusive economic zone off the Lakshadweep Islands without India's permission.

As the flagship for the Navy's 7th Fleet, the USS Blue Ridge plays a critical role in national security by overseeing all U.S. maritime operations in Asia and the western Pacific. The venerable warship is the Navy's second-oldest active-duty vessel and has survived the Vietnam War, the Cold War and tensions with China and North Korea.
