West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the "sudden deactivation" of Aadhaar cards of people in her state, "especially those" belonging to the SC, ST and OBC communities.

The Supreme Court will take up on June 9 pleas seeking review of a verdict upholding the Centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid but striking down some of its provisions, including its linking with bank accounts, mobile phones and school admissions.

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Centre for appropriate steps to link social media accounts with Aadhaar, the 12-digit unique identification number, to check the menace of "fake and paid news".

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and said that it empowers the marginalised sections of the society. The ruling, however, came with certain caveats with the top court mandating that the 12-digit identifier will not be required for obtaining SIM cards and opening bank accounts.

The Centre today strongly defended its decision to seed Aadhaar numbers with mobile phones, telling the Supreme Court that it could have been hauled up for contempt if the verification of mobile users was not undertaken by it.

The Supreme Court today said it was not sure whether bringing people "face to face" with authorities through Aadhaar was the best model as the State should reach them to accord the benefits of the welfare schemes.

While opening a new bank account, an applicant is not mandated to submit their Aadhaar number to the bank. However, the applicant must submit a proof to the bank that they have applied for the Aadhaar (UID) number.

The government will give 3-6 months to link the Aadhaar with PAN in case the Supreme Court rules in its favour, after which it may cancel all PANs that have not been linked
