Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan today came out in support of 'Udta Punjab', which is embroiled in a major controversy over censorship, saying the voice of a filmmaker should not be throttled.

"I have a lot of respect for Aamir Khan and his body of work as an actor. My personal belief is that India is the most tolerant country in the world and has been for thousands of years. When the world was fighting in holy crusades, one religion versus another, we were learning to live with each other," said Vivek Oberoi

The censor board in the country has become "a little aggressive" lately, said Bollywood actor Aamir Khan today, joining his co-actors and filmmakers in the debate on censorship.

Several Bollywood personalities including Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone and Mukesh Bhatt on Sunday expressed their strong reservation about the censor board's recent guidelines on 'cuss words' and raised the issue with Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting or (I and B) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

"I am in favour of the rating system. I think we should not try and pre-empt what the censor certification will be and how the members will react," said Aamir

"Our job is to certify. That we have done. We are not a censorship board. Political or ideological groups may advise their followers not to watch it," Leela Samson said

India's all-powerful censor board is planning a lighter approach to Bollywood after decades chopping tens of thousands of film scenes, from onscreen kisses to violent endings.
