Objecting to the Centre's decision of dropping one of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymns 'Abide with me' from Beating Retreat ceremony, Congress leader P Chidambaram said the government's move has hurt the "thinking and sensitive" people.

The well-known patriotic song "Ae Mere Watan ke Logon" will be played at this year's "Beating the Retreat" ceremony instead of "Abide with me", sources have told NDTV amid a controversy over the omission of the much loved hymn.

The government has chosen to omit 'Abide With Me', the solemn hymn that signalled the conclusion of the Beating Retreat ceremony - a centuries-old military tradition that, in war, marked the end of fighting for the day, with soldiers sheathing arms.

Setting the tone for the Jaipur Literature festival, Sufi gospel singer Sonam Kalra's voice, singing the famous hymn 'Abide with Me', welcomed delegates to what has become one of the biggest literary events in the world.
