Action Against Kolkata Top Cops

The Union Home Ministry has initiated disciplinary action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and a DCP for allegedly maligning the office of West Bengal Governor by promoting and spreading canards, a central government official said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has reportedly asked the West Bengal government to initiate disciplinary action against five police officers who took part in protests against the CBI in Kolkata earlier this week, sources said. It also reportedly plans to strip them of their medals in keeping with the All India Service Rules.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the state government is yet to receive any notice from the Ministry of Home Affairs for taking disciplinary action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for allegedly violating service conduct rules.

Six doctors' organisations on Monday said they would stop all work at the Out Patients Department or OPD section of private hospitals in West Bengal if no action was taken against a police officer who had allegedly assaulted a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital.
