Africans Attack Police In Delhi

Around 100 people of African origin on Saturday surrounded a police team in the Neb Sarai area of South Delhi, clashed with them, and freed Nigerian nationals who had been detained over visa expiration by the anti-drugs force.

In the latest in a series of attacks on Africans in Greater Noida near Delhi, a young Kenyan woman was pulled out of an Ola cab and assaulted by a group of men last night. The attack took place at Knowledge Park, which is not far from the spot where African students have been targeted by mobs since Monday.

Delhi Police today organised a number of sensitisation programmes in areas of south Delhi, following instruction from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to ensure safety and security of African people living in the national capital.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju tonight spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma and directed him to take prompt action against those involved in attacks on Africans saying India's image cannot be allowed to be tarnished by such incidents.

African students living in the country today expressed "deep concern" over the recent string of attacks on their compatriots and sought strict action from the police and local authorities against those who take law into their own hands to settle dispute with them.

The police has registered four separate cases of alleged assault on African nationals in the national capital, but added that none were part of a planned attack and were not racial in nature.
