Pakistan today summoned a top Afghan diplomat after security forces of the two countries exchanged gunfire over the contentious fencing issue at north-western Torkham border crossing.

Hitting out at Pakistan for using terrorists as "violent proxies", Afghanistan has blamed Islamabad's "unnecessary anxiety" over its ties with India for a sharp spike in civilian and military casualties that made 2015 the bloodiest year since 2001.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will proceed on a four-day visit to the US today for talks on a host of issues with President Barack Obama.
