With the entry of a new mosquito breed in the city, yet another life-taking parasite threatens the lives of people of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Doctors at AIIMS have identified the genotype of the chikungunya virus which has afflicted nearly 3,700 people in the national capital this season and concluded it is the same as the one that caused the 2006 outbreak of the vector-borne disease.

Chikungunya cases are still on the rise in the national capital as at least 2,000 blood test samples have tested positive for chikungunya at AIIMS only, where doctors are also studying the viral strain that is in circulation.

The death toll due to chikungunya-triggered complications stood at 12 on Wednesday, with two new cases reported from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), prompting Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to seek a report from the Delhi Government on the rising deaths and number of patients.
