In a scathing report, national auditor CAG on Tuesday highlighted a range of operational shortcomings in frontline airfields of the Indian Air Force, including lack of aircraft refuellers, radars and ammunition handling equipment.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has pulled up national carrier Air India for the inordinate delay in the process of leasing narrow body planes for replacing its vintage A320 aircraft.

Air India, which is staying afloat on taxpayers' money, reported an operational profit of Rs 105 crore in 2015-16 -- its first in more than a decade.

India's Tejas Light Combat Aircraft project, in the works for over three decades, came under severe criticism from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on Friday, which said the Mark-I version has several shortcomings and does not meet IAF specifications.

Accidents involving fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force in 2012-13 were caused due to "technical defects" and "human error", according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General. The number of such mishaps were considerably higher than in the past, says the government auditor.

The issue has been clarified in the wake of doubts being raised by various stakeholders with regard to the applicability of the provisions related to appointment of auditors by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) to 'deemed government companies', that is firms owned or controlled by two or more government entities.

The Air Force was rapped by the CAG for "irregularities" in procurement of more than 100 expensive Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova vehicles against the procurement provisions to replace existing ones.

The Defence Ministry changed its own rules to sign a contract worth nearly 3700 crores for 12 helicopters with AgustaWestland, an Italian-owned company, the government's auditor has said in a report that dissects the deal that's now being investigated for possible kickbacks in both Italy and India.

Defence Minister AK Antony had questioned the IAF decision to hold overseas trials for the VVIP chopper deal but later agreed to the same after receiving an assurance from the then IAF top brass, states a CAG report.
