A Parliamentary panel on Wednesday pitched for having uniform charges for cancellation of air tickets across airlines and expressed concerns that the charges are not regulated by the government.

Airlines will have to refund money collected from tickets that were cancelled following the coronavirus induced lockdown without any cancellation charge, the Supreme Court said today. The judgement applies for bookings made for both domestic and international tickets during the period.

The Civil Aviation Ministry today said that the passengers who had booked flight tickets during the first phase of lockdown for travel up to May 3 must get a full refund from the airlines without any cancellation charges if they ask for it.

Aviation watchdog DGCA has asked international airlines to consider waiving ticket cancellation and reschedule charges or look at providing any other incentive, amid coronavirus outbreak.

"Due to the ongoing situation in Lucknow, Vistara announces free change to bookings and cancellation without any penalty for those booked to travel to and from Lucknow. Fare difference, if any, will be applicable," a Vistara statement said.

Air India has decided that from May 1, if a customer wants to cancel his air ticket or make changes in it within 24 hours of booking, he will not be charged any fee, according to an airline document.

A Pune-based travel firm catering to personal travel needs of armed forces, paramilitary forces and their family members, today said it will refund its customers the amount due from Jet Airways flight cancellations, without waiting for the airline to do the same.

Several airlines waived cancellations and re-booking charges for the armed forces and for other passengers following the escalation in tension along the Line of Control and border with Pakistan, which led the government to suspend commercial operations at most of the airports north of New Delhi Wednesday.

The DGCA is unlikely to make it compulsory to print cancellation charges on air tickets, with the Indian aviation watchdog suggesting that the charges be "indicated prominently" at the time of booking, according to an official document.

According to the Parliamentary panel's other recommendations, airline's cancellation charges should not be allowed to exceed 50 per cent of the basic fare.
