The company plans to expand the capacity of its Lanjigarh alumina refinery to 5 million tonnes from the current 2 million tonnes and double the capacity of its Jharsuguda aluminium smelter to 2 million tonnes.

Navaratna PSU National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has been granted Pottangi Bauxite Mines, in Koraput district of Odisha, where the company's 22,75,000-tonne lumina refinery is located.

Odisha-based Navratna PSE Nalco has announced investment of Rs 20,550 crore for expansion of its alumina refinery at Damanjodi and setting up an aluminium park at Angul in the state.

Vedanta Ltd will halve output at its 1 million tonne-a-year alumina refinery in Odisha state in about two months and cut jobs, a senior executive said, due mainly to a shortage of raw material bauxite and weak world prices.

Mining conglomerate Vedanta on Tuesday said it will initiate steps for gradual closure of its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Odisha mainly due to shortage of raw material and absence of bauxite linkage within state.

While the sharp rupee fall has helped the IT, pharmaceuticals, textiles and two-wheeler segments, the five most vulnerable sectors are refineries, iron and steel, fertilisers, aluminium and power, rating agency Care said on Tuesday.

The company said L&T-MMH has won an EPC order from Emirates Global Aluminium (EMA) for its greenfield alumina refinery development project in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi.

"We have received villagers' approval and now, we need to get some clearances for taking the project ahead. Around Rs 10,000 crore investment would be required to jack up the plant capacity to six mtpa from one mtpa now," a senior official of the company told PTI.

Most of the nearly 2,000 people present on Wednesday at the public hearing in Biswanathpur village of Odisha were "OK" with the project to expand the refinery, said B. K. Upadhyaya, the top bureaucrat of the district where the village is located.

Vedanta Aluminium's 1 million tonne-a-year alumina refinery in the eastern state has been struggling to source key raw material bauxite since its commissioning in August 2007. The company has been forced to import bauxite as a result.

The company, a unit of London-listed Vedanta Resources Plc, has been importing more than 1 million tonnes of alumina per year because plans to mine bauxite to feed its alumina refinery are on hold while the authorities look at opposition from people in the eastern state of Odisha.
