The Supreme Court has pulled up the Centre and the states over the issue of cow vigilantism and mob killings. The top court on Monday sought a response from the states on compensation for the families of mob killing victims.

The mob violence incident which lead to the death of a Muslim man due to the suspicion of cow smuggling in Rajasthan's Alwar district was raised in the Rajya Sabha, with the opposition Trinamool Congress demanding an a law to prevent killings by vigilantes.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will head a ministerial panel to look into new laws to curb incidents of mob lynching, the government announced on Monday. The ministers' panel will submit its report to Prime Minister Narendra Modi based on the recommendations of a high-level committee led by the Union Home Secretary.
