In a complex underslung operation at 11,500 feet, a Mi-17 V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force successfully airlifted a stranded civilian helicopter from the Panchtarni helipad near the Amarnath shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army on Monday airlifted a critically injured 50-year-old Amarnath pilgrim from Brarimarg helipad in Jammu & Kashmir after he fell around 100 feet when his pony lost balance, said officials.

Over 7,000 pilgrims visited "Barfani Baba" on Day 1 of the Amarnath Yatra which commenced this year after a gap of two years.

For the first time, the pilgrims this year can avail of helicopter service directly from Srinagar for Amarnath Yatra, an annual Hindu pilgrimage in South Kashmir.

Anticipating heavy tourist rush on the Amarnath Yatra route this year, the centre has asked for a helicopter service for pilgrims directly from Srinagar to Panchtarni.

Amarnath yatra: The cost includes flight tickets, hotel and tent accommodation, breakfast and dinner meals, helicopter tickets and registration pass.

They Amarnath Yatra will begin on June 28 and conclude on August 26.
