Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh resigned from the Congress along with his wife Ameeta on Tuesday, claiming that they cannot remain in a party ailing from lack of communication and clarity. They are expected to join the BJP on Wednesday.

Sanjay Singh Amethi:Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Sinh, who is from the Amethi royal family, resigned from the Congress on Tuesday and said he would join the BJP on Wednesday.

If the BJP had planned a royal vs royal battle for the Amethi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh, it could well get that even after the Samajwadi Party announced that its Gayatri Prajapati would contest the seat and not a Congress candidate. The Congress' Ameeta Sinh, who hoped to be fielded, has said she will contest as a rebel candidate.

Sanjay Singh, Rajya Sabha member and the "Raja of Amethi," will head the Congress' campaign committee for the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

The high-profile Amethi constituency is at the centre of a royal feud. Amethi's erstwhile royal and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and his son from his first wife Anant Vikram have been locked in a turf battle ever since the latter moved into the Bhupati Bhavan palace in Amethi with his mother this July.

A long-standing property dispute between the erstwhile Amethi royal, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, and his former wife, Garima Singh, turned ugly today, as her supporters clashed with the police. A constable died when supporters of Garima Singh opened fire at the police.
