A China-bound merchant vessel with 18 crew members which set sail from Haldia port in West Bengal has lost contact with the ground staff following the cyclonic storm Phailin which swept coastal Odisha on Saturday night, the Coast Guard said on Sunday.

India will launch its first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, on August 12 from the Kochi shipyard. This will make India only the fifth country after the US, Russia, Britain and France to have the capability to build such vessels.

India has told Sri Lanka to free 53 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu at the earliest. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has written to the Prime Minister, asking him to summon the Sri Lankan envoy. "Let Sri Lanka not be emboldened by your silence," she wrote.
