Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday included a not-so-subtle dig at mega film star Amitabh Bachchan, who was once one of her father Rajiv Gandhi's closest friends. The Congress leader made the comments in Uttar Pradesh on the last day of an acrimonious campaign for the marathon national election.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan had shared close ties with Bal Thackeray, one of the most enigmatic politicians who had millions of devoted followers and once controlled Mumbai. For him, Mr Bachchan said, Balasaheb was like family and their relation was "very intimate and personal".

Actor Amitabh Bachchan has spoken at length about his name featuring in the Panama papers and Bofors scandal, explaining that he has always cooperated with the "system" but wishes to be left alone at this stage of his life.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan said his existence was questioned when he and his family were accused in the Bofors case and it took them 25 painful years to emerge out of the scandal despite their innocence.

"The Bofors controversy, which was falsely and maliciously accusing my family and me was at its prime. We had moved courts in London. The film was under its making during those days, and much like several other projects that I was involved in, was under severe criticism," wrote Mr Bachchan

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, actor Amitabh Bachchan said that he does not intend to talk about his infamous falling out with the Gandhis after the Bofors scandal. "This is something I need to contain with me and not make it public," he said.
