Andhra Pradesh Bye-election

Bye-elections to the two Parliamentary Constituencies of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and the 14 Assembly constituencies in 10 states will be held on April 17, the Election Commission said in a statement today.

The frequent bye-elections in Andhra Pradesh, five times since the 2009 assembly and Lok Sabha polls, are putting substantial burden on the public exchequer. According to official sources, the cumulative cost of all the five by-polls is about Rs 70 crore.

As many as 242 candidates are in the fray for 18 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh where by-elections will be held on June 12.

As many as 84 nominations, out of the total 365 filed for the June 12 by-elections to one Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, were rejected after scrutiny on Saturday.

Several companies of para-military forces along with local police would be deployed to ensure peaceful bye-elections in Andhra Pradesh on June 12, state DGP V Dinesh Reddy said.

Ahead of the June 12 bye-election to the Ramachandrapuram constituency, a large amount of cash and illicit liquor has been seized there from various persons.

The CPI today announced it would not contest the upcoming bye-elections to seven Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh even as it asserted that its friendly ties with TDP will continue.
