Anti-maoist Strategy

Calling for "unity of purpose" amongst all Maoist-affected states, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today advocated the formation of a strategic and unified command to foil attempts to "stall development and throttle democracy at gunpoint".

The government today formed a high-level committee to review the Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) to fine-tune the anti-Maoists strategy following the ambush early this week in which 14 CRPF personnel were killed by Naxals in Chhattisgarh.

The brutal massacre in Chhattisgarh last week has prompted an internal exercise by the Home Ministry that is now seeking to tweak the Centre's policy to tackle the Maoist menace. Two senior Congress leaders were among the 24 killed in an ambush by the Maoists on Saturday last.

After the grieving, a re-look at strategy. The Centre is holding a series of internal meetings to rework its plan on battling Maoist activity in the heart of the country, termed for the first time by a senior minister as "terrorism".

In recent weeks, India's strategy in dealing with the Naxals has been in focus after a spate of attacks. On Tuesday, Defence Minister AK Antony met the three service chiefs ahead of a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security that's likely to discuss the anti-Maoist strategy.
