India is celebrating its 75th Republic Day today with its armed forces displaying its military might and rich cultural heritage at the Kartavya Path in the heart of the national capital.

On Republic Day, flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held in different parts of the country. The grandest and most important of these parades is held at Rajpath, now known as Kartavya Path, in Delhi.

Showcasing a significant stride towards gender inclusivity in the country's armed forces, women officers will take the helm of the Indian Coast Guard contingent during this year's Republic Day parade.

The decision has been conveyed to the armed forces and government departments and its implementation is being worked out, sources said.

As India celebrated its 74th Republic Day today, Kartavya Path in the national capital witnessed the prowess of the armed forces armoured with hi-tech indigenously made equipment.

This year's Republic Day parade will have 16 marching contingents, 17 military bands and 25 tableaux of various states, departments and armed forces, the Indian Army said in a statement on Saturday.

For the first time, a 122-member strong contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces will participate at the Republic Day celebrations. Both countries' 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties imbues the participation of such a huge contingent from a friendly neighbour in the celebrations, with special significance, sources said.
