Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday welcomed a general court martial verdict sentencing seven Army personnel, including a major general, to life imprisonment for a fake encounter 24 years ago and said it would strengthen people's faith in the judiciary and the Army.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday filed a chargesheet against an Army Colonel, a Major and seven others in a case of alleged fake encounter in which three youths were killed in the frontier district of Kupwara in April this year.

An Army Major named in the alleged fake encounter case in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended pending inquiry.
