Army Operations In Northeast

Insurgents and terrorists in the northeast and Kashmir need to be dealt with strongly and a Supreme Court order curbing the use of "excessive and retaliatory force" is hampering army operations in these areas, the Centre told the top court today. The order, the Centre said in an appeal, should be reconsidered.

The Army and Air Force have started working on relief and rescue operations in quake-hit Manipur. A defence official said an AN32 plane of Air Force was going to Imphal from Guwahati to take 75 NDRF personnel for relief and rescue operations.

The Centre on Wednesday defended army operations in the northeast and Jammu and Kashmir, and told the Supreme Court that India was faced with a war-like situation which was not akin to inter-country conventional war.

Army chief General Dalbir Singh, visiting the northeast on Friday to review the security situation, said all operations in the hinterland of the region should be "people friendly".
