A Holocaust-denying white supremacist is set to become the Republican nominee for a congressional seat in the US state of Illinois, according to local media.

The S&P 500 hit an intraday record high for the seventh time in eight sessions on Thursday after the European Central Bank (ECB) cut rates to record lows and outlined further accommodative monetary policy actions.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 220.88 points, or 1.75 per cent, at 12,823.14.

In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average dipped 4.80 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 13,236.83.
